Since the initial release of their Ryzen processors in 2017, AMD has gone a long way over the past many years.
After Intel’s Alder Lake release, AMD will keep breaking the barriers and innovating. Ryzen 7000 series is the only way for AMD to keep on the competition against Intel’s big.LITTLE. AMD skipped 6000 from its series as Ryzen 6000 is decided to be a mobile processor. But to clear out all the doubts, we are certainly here.
Moving on:
AMD Ryzen 7000 Series release date
Ryzen 7000 is expected to be released in Fall 2022, but as it is too early, no specific dates were given out by AMD.
Both RDNA 3 and Zen 4 (Ryzen 7000) will be released in 2022, as confirmed by Lisa Su, at the end of July 2021. A quick glimpse of Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 6000 mobile, and the Ryzen 5800X3D, which was released in April of 2022, was shown by AMD during the CES 2022.
A bit of information on the AM5 platform, Lisa Su gave a showcase of Ryzen 7000 at Computex 2022, and she also confirmed the release in Fall 2022. Throughout 2023, AMD’s Dragon Range and Phoenix lineups will be delivered. Phoenix will be there for thin and light gaming laptops, while with 55W+ CPUs, Dragon Range CPUs will be for powerful gaming laptops. Zen 4 is the base for these both gaming laptops.
The Ryzen 7 5700X, Ryzen 5 5600 (non-X), Ryzen 5 5500, and Ryzen 5800X3D are the Zen-3 CPUs released in 2022 and can be enjoyed until then. With someone still on an AM4 motherboard, these new CPUs are a great option for an easy upgrade.
AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Specs and Features
Things are more apparent now about the Ryzen naming scheme, which was confusing before CES 2022. The final answer to Intel’s Alder Lake and Raptor Lake is the desktop ZEN 4 CPU on a 5nm process node, called the Ryzen 7000.
The skipped numbering (Ryzen 6000) is for mobile CPUs only.
They improved efficiency and increased performance with Intel’s new hybrid technology, big.LITTLE. AMD has a lot to worry about, and competing against Intel won’t be that easy. So, the expectations are high for AMD’s new generation processors.
The 16-core flagship Ryzen 7000 CPU running Ghostwire: Tokyo with the core clock going up to 5.5 GHz was showcased by AMD during Computex 2022. It is a giant leap for AMD as the highest frequency a Ryzen CPU has reached is just 4.9 GHz (5950X).
AMD CEO Lisa Su, Computex 2022“We designed Zen 4 to run significantly faster than our previous generation, and that increase in frequency can translate into a smoother gaming experience. And while this is just one example, we’re excited for gamers to get their hands on our Ryzen 7000 series.”
The core frequency not being the only thing to boast about; a 15% boost in single-threaded performance, double L2 cache size, and expanded instructions with AI acceleration have also been claimed by AMD.
With a 15% boost in performance already being more than enough, there is no surety about AI acceleration and what it will bring.
RDNA 2:
Making sense for gamers, getting rid of an iGPU to boost the CPU’s performance was promoted by AMD, as all generations of Ryzen processors did not come with any graphics solution.
An iGPU isn’t needed as most gamers have a dedicated graphics card on their PC. A slower G-type Ryzen CPU with an iGPU, for example, Ryzen 2400G, 4700G, 5600G, 5700G, and others, can be obtained by users.
With RDNA 2, not just a common GPU, Ryzen 7000 may have an iGPU. As thought by PC Hardware insider, Komachi_Ensaka, the RDNA 2 iGPU could come with two WGPs (Work Group Processors) at 1.1 GHz, and it can be helpful. And it can lead to things being different.
The Ryzen 6000 is performing incredibly well and blowing Intel’s XE iGPUs with the RDNA 2 iGPUs in the mobile. Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs might have a much more powerful RDNA 2 graphics card has also been claimed by Komachi. It can be a thumbs up for Zen 4.
RDNA 3:
With iGPUs already proven to be quite powerful in AMD’s latest mobile processors, the talk about the power of RDNA 2 in the future generation of Ryzen processors has already been done.
But it has been pointed out that RDNA 3 GPUs will be seen in the Ryzen 7000 APUs (Phoenix). Being extremely competitive with Nvidia’s RTX 4000 series, AMD’s next generation of graphics cards will blow off the competition and change the game.
The integrated/mobile variants will be much faster than the current iGPUs, and it can quickly be expected while looking at how fast desktop RX 7000 GPUs will be. The GPU inside Zen 4 mobile SKUs will be as fast as Nvidia’s RTX 3060M; such talks are already on the tongue of the leakers.
Note: The Zen 4 GPU is built directly onto the CPU die, drawing less power, while the RTX 3060M is a discrete GPU built into a laptop’s mainboard.
Moving To The AM5 Platform:
Leaving AM4 behind, the new 5nm AMD processors will be moving to a new scale. With the last five generations of CPU stuck with AM4, it is time to update to something faster, more efficient, and better.
Considering the future-proofing of your system, Ryzen 5800X3D still being on AM4 is a reliable choice. Including the essential DDR5 memory, AM5 is the best possible decision for AMD as it opens up a lot of space for many other new technologies.
DDR5 Memory
With frequencies going even higher, DDR5 is considerably faster than DDR4, as it already clicks much higher frequencies. It has to be noted that it is just the beginning of DDR5. Any AM5 motherboards won’t support DDR4. At the same time, it is a contradiction regarding Alder Lake.
With DDR5 being fast and the future, it is not sure whether or not to say goodbye to DDR4 yet, as it is pronounced that the DDR5 has not yet matured. In addition to it, with such a decision, the possibility of combining a cheaper DDR4 RAM kit and motherboard with a Zen 4 CPU is gone.
Despite Zen 4 not having any support for DDR4 memory, it will go along with [email protected]. You can plug and rock with Ryzen 7000 CPUs and 5000+MHz DDR5 kits when released. Seeing those limits pushed even further by overclocking, this will be a nice improvement over Alder Lake’s 4800MHz support.
PCIe 5.0 And LGA
AM5 will bring PCIe 5.0 and USB 4.0, with the new DRAM, not the only improvement for more and faster PCIe lanes and faster USB. There will be support PCIe 5.0 no matter what you get, like an X670 Extreme, X670, or a B650. That is because PCIe 5.0 will be supported on all variations of AM5 motherboards.
The Extreme variant of the X670 will get PCIe 5.0 everywhere, but B650 boards will have PCIe 5.0 only for storage, while X670 boards will have 5.0 for the graphics lanes.
The motherboard manufacturers will be allowed to add up to 14 20Gbit USB 3. x ports with the widespread use of PCIe 5.0. In contrast, Intel’s Alder Lake platform can run only 4 of them at 20Gbit.
With the pins on the motherboard rather than the CPU, the AM5 platform will also use LGA1718. As a matter of personal preference, the switch from PGA to LGA won’t bring any significant advantages or disadvantages.
With getting a new (and unique) heat spreader for this new generation of Ryzen CPUs, it is uncertain whether this new heat spreader is used to cut costs or improve thermals.
3D V-Cache
3D V-Cache is introduced by AMD to further boost gaming performance on Ryzen processors. This method allows the L3 cache to be 3D stacked. The addition of 96MB of L3 cache on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D was managed by this method.
It is three times more than the original 5800X and is almost double compared to the 5950X. With 3D V-Cache proven successful with the 5800X3D, it is highly expected that this will probably be seen in Zen 4 processors.
With 3D stacked cache memory being sensitive, the 5800X3D is fixed at 1.35V and locked out from overclocking. It prevents instability or destruction of the CPU. We might not see the 3D V-Cache in the first iteration of the Ryzen 7000 processor.
My sources tell me that ZEN4 3D needs to wait for the production line ZEN3D to stop .So, yes, 2023 is more likely.
— Greymon55 (@greymon55) April 14, 2022
AMD will start production of Zen 4 SKUs with the new cache memory as the ZEN3D (3D cache for Zen 3) is stopped pushing out, as suggested by Greymon55. And it will not be happening in 2022 but instead in 2023.
Rumors
Half a year from the release date, a massive bundle of information is available regarding the CPUs. But surprisingly, leaks surrounding Zen 4 are pretty scarce.
The potential power draw of Ryzen 7000 SKUs is the only thing known currently. And thanks to @greymon55, we have got some other leaks too:
- 65W – Ryzen 7600/X SKU. It could either be a 6-core or an 8-core, it’s not confirmed.
- 105W – Ryzen 9 7900X, 12-core/24-thread SKU.
- 170W – Ryzen 9 7950X 16-core/32-thread CPU.
The core counts and the SKU names are just guesses, and we can say nothing for sure regarding what it actually will be. With Zen 4 7950X having an RDNA 2 iGPU and it may be a 5.0+ GHz, the flagship CPU will be a much higher draw compared to its predecessors.
At OpenBenchmarking.org, one Ryzen CPU clocked at 5.21 GHz. AMD’s highest clock CPU is the 5950X (4.9 GHz) with the previous generations; it is splendid to see the AMD CPU finally climbing that 5.0 GHz barrier.
AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Pricing
With Intel being very competitive throughout 2022, AMD must be cautious with these prices. And due to this competition, it is most probable that the Ryzen 7000 might be cheaper than the 5000 series.
Some estimates are presented below:
- Ryzen 5 7600X – $279
- Ryzen 7 7700X – $359
- Ryzen 7 7800X – $419
- Ryzen 9 7900X – $499
- Ryzen 9 7950X – $759
It will be lovely if they fall around the estimated prices, but as they are expected to be better, they can also be more expensive than the previous generations.
Ryzen 5800X3D
To take the number one gaming CPU spot from the i9-12900K, AMD needed to create one last big bang for the AM4. And the Ryzen 5800X3D is what they wanted.
Seeing the benchmarks, it is evident that the 5800X3D is faster than Intel’s flagship i9. The new 3D stacked cache memory, as we discussed earlier too, was the reason behind this wrecker of a performance.
While Intel released the i9-12900 KS, which is clocked at 5.5 GHz (300MHz faster than the K version), it still is not creating much difference, not even a 1% difference in the speed. And thus, the fastest gaming CPU title is co-shared between AMD and Intel.
Additionally, here are some specifications for Ryzen 5800X3D.
CPU | Ryzen 7 5800X3D |
---|---|
Cores | 8 |
Threads | 16 |
Base Clock | 3.4 GHz |
Boost Clock | 4.5 GHz |
L3 Cache | 64MB 3D V-Cache + 32MB 2D Cache |
TDP | 105W |
Performance
It is too early to look out for the performance numbers on the Zen 4, as there is not even a first-hand benchmark for Zen 4. Although about the 16-core and an 8-core Ryzen 7000 CPUs, there is a rumor. Both mentioned are supposedly the successors of 5950X and 5800X.
The potential increase in performance can be said indeed about the new generation AMD CPUs. An IPC improvement of about 10 to 15% is expected as AMD will be switching to a 5nm node and putting past the 7nm process used for Zen 3.
And all that we know is just a glimpse of what is to come. We might be seeing higher clocks, faster memory, and more as AMD indeed has a lot planned. Another 15% performance uplift is possible, considering their new 3D V-Cache technology and 3D stacking cache. And a real boost hooks up Zen 4 30% to 40% faster than Ryzen 5000, combining that with the IPC improvement.
None of these statements has been confirmed by the officials, so you should look at them and have an idea of what is there instead of being sure of whatever is stated. All of the mentioned numbers are estimates, rumors, and thoughts.
